In 1929, I lost a baby

In 1929, I lost a baby. Simultaneously I underwent surgery, which left me with a protruding scar on my stomach. If I wore a bathing suit or a tight dress, the protrusion stood out. As I gained weight, it became more and more noticeable. I was also advised by the physician that I needed to have another operation for the removal of a tumor.

It was about this time that a friend presented me with a copy of a Christian Science Sentinel. My reading of English was poor. I couldn't understand the articles, but from the testimonies I learned that God never made disease and that He loves me. When I returned to the physician for further X rays, the tumor had disappeared. I was overjoyed, and I began attending a Church of Christ, Scientist.

I joined a branch church and The Mother Church, and had class instruction from a faithful Christian Science teacher. I paid little attention to the protrusion. Whenever I thought about it, I applied the truth given in Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy (p. 463): "A spiritual idea has not a single element of error, and this truth removes properly whatever is offensive." And also from Unity of Good (p. 60) by Mrs. Eddy, where she states, "This false sense of substance must yield to His eternal presence, and so dissolve."
