To one leaning solely on material methods for attainment, life...
To one leaning solely on material methods for attainment, life can become a devastating experience. But in an extremity we can always turn to God and be helped, as I quickly found when first applying what I was learning in Christian Science.
The extremity for me was mainly a career situation in the large manufacturing company where I worked. After several years of steady progress and promotion, I was stymied, frustrated, and halted in my rapid forward progress by a high-level manager whom I did not even know very well. I tried everything, humanly speaking, but resentment grew, and the situation went from bad to worse. Nothing I tried seemed to work at all, and to add to the anguish, a physical problem began to manifest itself—something new to my experience.
One day after all else failed, my mother-in-law, who knew nothing about the career details but who was a student of Christian Science, simply asked why I didn't try Christian Science.
I knew very little of Christian Science, but I consented to call a practitioner. This done, I was on my way to an entirely different life. The practitioner and I talked of God as one infinite, omnipresent Mind, and I began to seek and see the manifestation of this one Mind in everything I beheld. My thought was like a sponge, for I had exhausted all other means. Where I had prided myself on being agnostic, I now gained a clear picture of God, not only as Mind, but as infinite Love and Principle, a concept of God that never before registered through the orthodox religion in which I had been brought up.
In a short time my career situation looked entirely different. It had not actually changed, but my view of it had. The physical problem which had troubled me was healed. I could see God working everywhere, even through the man I had so resented, for holding such negative opinions about me. Very shortly I was transferred to new responsibilities which offered excellent opportunity, and within six months after that, I was offered a position in another company far beyond my fondest dreams at the time.
Some years later, in an unexpected way, it was possible for me to help the manager mentioned above. He didn't know it, but I was able to suggest his name for a very high post, which became a step in his career path.
Ten years later while I myself was negotiating for a high post in a new company, I received unexpected word that the same manager had just moved in above me and would now make the decision concerning me. This seemed pure coincidence since neither one of us was trying to follow the other. For a fleeting moment the old resentment flashed by, immediately to be replaced by divine Love with love in my own heart, respect, and appreciation through the growing knowledge I was gaining in Christian Science. He selected me for the job, and we worked together for fruitful years, and have remained career friends. This has been to me the ultimate proof of God's power, showing the infinite nature of His goodness and tracing its way for me from the original experience that brought me into Science.
Many other experiences have come over the years, healing of social drinking and smoking problems, improvement in character traits, protection, and healing of physical illness in our family of three children.
Rather than leaning anymore on human methods, I can truly agree with Mrs. Eddy when she says in the first line of the Preface to Science and Health, "To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, to-day is big with blessings."
