One night a few years ago I slipped on ice in the driveway of our home, striking my head and one side of my body on the concrete rim of a flower bed. When I attempted to call out for help, I found that I could not speak or move. The temperature was below zero, and a wave of fear swept over me that my husband would not be expecting me back so soon, and that I might not be found for hours. There was great pain, and I could take only very shallow breaths without feeling I was passing out.

After a time, I was able to reach out to God for help, and certain statements from the Bible and the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, began to pour into my consciousness. One that I found especially helpful was (ibid., p. 258), "Never born and never dying, it were impossible for man, under the government of God in eternal Science, to fall from his high estate."

After a time I was able to crawl up on our porch and reach the doorbell. My husband quickly telephoned my teacher for help through prayer, and although I could not remove my clothing I finally was able to find some comfort on a couch, where I spent the night. There were several calls to my teacher that night, as the physical symptoms were very frightening, and I have always been grateful for the loving and firm support he gave during this trial. Members of my family lovingly encouraged me to have X rays taken, and to seek medical help, but there was never the slightest temptation to resort to anything other than spiritual means for healing. I had been a serious and eager student of Christian Science for a good many years, and I expected it to heal me now.
