Related to the Lesson-Sermon for August 27, 1972, in the CHRISTIAN SCIENCE QUARTERLY Subject: Christ Jesus

His name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace (Isa. 9:6)

In place of "mighty God," a manuscript of the Septuagint (Greek) version suggests "Mighty One, Potentate." The Revised Standard Version, followed by most modern translations, sees four titles here (omitting the comma between "Wonderful" and "Counsellor"). The Interpreter's Bible comments: "Wonderful Counselor: I.e., the supreme fount of wisdom or 'Wonderful in Purpose' (cf. 14:24). Mighty God: 'Divine in might.'" Of "Prince of Peace" it adds, "It must be remembered that the Hebrew word for peace ... means not merely the cessation of war but a condition of rich, harmonious, and positive well-being."
