The Answer to Despair
There is a story that once a man dropped in to visit the devil at his workshop. He browsed among the various tools, and saw a wedge-shaped one.
"What do you use that for?" he asked, pointing.
"Oh, that!" the devil called from his workbench, "that's my favorite tool. I use it with almost everyone. It works when all else fails. I've named it Discouragement."
