Destroying the Roots of Disease

Under the laws of divine metaphysics, the analysis of a case to find the cause of disease and to treat it is quite distinct from medical diagnosis. A matter-physician tests the blood, feels the pulse, asks the patient how his body feels, takes his temperature—all for the purpose of finding out what is physically wrong with him.

A Christian Science practitioner does none of these things. He does not consult the patient about his physical symptoms. He concerns himself solely with thought rather than with matter, in accordance with the instruction in Science and Health: "Observe mind instead of body, lest aught unfit for development enter thought. Think less of material conditions and more of spiritual." Science and Health, p. 419;

The Christian Scientist observes the mind of his patient in order to detect unhealthy thoughts—fears, lusts, and illusions of evil— for he knows that these are the roots of unhealthy bodily conditions. After he has detected them, he proceeds to destroy them by recognizing their unreality. He knows that unhealthy thoughts do not come from God, the one divine Mind, in whom all consciousness and being is healthy, harmonious, perfect, but from mortal mind, the suppositional counterfeit of divine Mind, God, or good. So he mentally denies them, affirms the fact that in reality man expresses the qualities of God, divine Mind; and this truth then frees his patient from disease.
