I Found Freedom in Prison
An interview with a former "resident"
Lehman Hunter is studying creative writing at Manhattan City College. He visits prisons to talk with inmates about Christian Science.
I grew up in Brooklyn, doing the things that most children do in the ghetto. My parents tried to bring me up right, but, you know, people get wrapped up so much in their own lives it's hard for them to see what's really happening to their children.
My mother wanted the best education for me. But the schools in my neighborhood were just like they are today—probably worse. I went to high school in another part of town. It is a very good one academically, even though it's one of those social club, white middleclass schools with a long history of racial antagonism.
