Although Christian Science came into my life in 1928 when I married a Christian Scientist, I did not accept it or feel the need of it until forty years later. I did attend church services with my wife quite regularly, and our two children were raised to adulthood with complete reliance on this Science. I witnessed a number of quick healings in our family through Christian Science, but I myself remained medically minded.

About 1959, I was having increasing difficulty breathing. I asked a medical doctor for a complete physical examination. After the examination and two chest X rays, I heard this verdict: "You do not have lung cancer but you do have emphysema. There is no cure for it, and the history of the disease is that it will get steadily worse." It was suggested that I start taking three different kinds of drugs each day, and I carried a fourth for emergencies. This diagnosis was later confirmed by the medical staff of Social Security at the time of my retirement, for I was declared totally disabled by them.

Although I had lived in Wisconsin all my life, I could no longer bear to breathe the cold winter air. The last two winters I could not drive my own car when the weather was cold. My wife drove me to the office and picked me up at night. I retired in January of 1967, and we moved to Arizona, but returned to Wisconsin during the summer.
