The Man Jesus

Not long ago, listening to the lovely old evangelical hymn of the story of Jesus, sung in a far–off little island church, I found myself thinking, "Yes, I too love to tell the story, the story of Jesus the man—the man who has done more to help humanity than any other man who ever lived." And doesn't the world need his story today almost more, perhaps, than ever before? It is so much more than a story; it is a vivid example of how life should be lived by each one of us.

The Christ, revealed today through Christian Science in its unspent healing power, is always with us. It is the manifestation of divine Truth in action right where we are. But for us to know the Christ and live it in our daily lives, we must understand to the full the man Jesus and the methods of this man who so consistently demonstrated the Christ in daily experience. We need to find the Christ in and through the example of Jesus the man. At the same time, we will know and understand Jesus more through the power of the Christ working in us.

It is always of great interest to me that when the disciples went forth, after Jesus left them, to follow the way of life he had taught they didn't just preach Christ to the people they saved and healed. They preached Christ Jesus, thus showing the importance of the man whose life had demonstrated the power of the Christ and taught them through example how to heal. It was through the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth that they healed, and great were the healings that took place and many the people added to the Christian community "in his name," thus giving the man Jesus his place in the divine order of salvation.
