Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart . . . and thy neighbour as thyself (Luke 10:27)

In Jesus' reply to the lawyer (verse 25) he combines the substance of two passages from Old Testament law that would be familiar to his questioners: Deuteronomy 6: 5 and Leviticus 19:18.

To love him with all the heart, . . . and to love his neighbour as himself, is more than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices (Mark 12:33)
