Step by Step

Rarely do we scale the heights with one leap. Reaching a high goal is usually a step-by-step climb requiring intelligence, patience, courage, and inspiration.

The ascent, viewed from beneath, may seem awesome, but really all we need to do is take it one step at a time. This attitude is particularly helpful to the advancing student of Christian Science. To him the ultimate, the most worthwhile, objective is spiritual perfection and the freedom it brings. But this may seem very far away. Even the nearer and more directly attainable goals of improved health, happiness, and supply sometimes appear illusive or out of reach.

But the student can begin, and his first and vital step in the right direction is to learn the nature of the good he is seeking and how to attain it. Christian Science teaches him that good is the primal quality of God, who is infinite spiritual substance and intelligence, never separate from man and the universe. Then, every time the Scientist gratefully realizes his present unity with divine good, and puts it into practice, he is advancing toward a higher spiritual consciousness. He is getting closer to meeting his immediate need of a healthy, harmonious humanhood. And he is also a step nearer the ultimate heights of perfect being.
