I was raised in a church of another faith and had several years' formal religious training in a Bible college and seminary. For ten years I worked professionally as a full-time director of church activities in a church of another denomination. At first my interest in Christian Science was to try to disprove it.

My former employer introduced me to Christian Science and gave me my first copy of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. When I began reading it, I was amazed to find it strengthened ideas I already accepted as true, and I found myself agreeing with what I read. I was like a hungry child as I read, and my interest increased. Soon my attitude of trying to disprove was replaced with joy and eagerness to know more of this wonderful religion.

I wanted to be convinced that the religion really worked. I decided first to contact a Christian Science practitioner, for I had many questions. At that time I was smoking heavily. I had tried to quit several times before, but never lost the desire and always returned to the habit. So I decided that this would be a real test for Christian Science.
