I would like to share a healing which occurred in the business world. As one of the founders of, and an executive in, a modest but multiplant international manufacturing concern, I am accustomed to the normal business activities in sales, finance, engineering, and production, and have often put Christian Science to the test in these activities and have not found it wanting. But one recent summer and fall, during a year in which new orders were falling far short of expectations and profits were down substantially, several resignations of key personnel served to create insecure feelings in many of our personnel, and even to arouse some concern among our customers. I found myself distressed and uncertain as to the best way to restore the stable yet dynamic growth our company had long enjoyed.
The situation was one of inharmony, fear, and uncertainty. I also felt resentment toward those who had left the company, especially toward two who had gone to competitors.
Having seen what needed to be met in my thinking, I immediately set to work with the truth. For the claim of inharmony, I gave much thought to Mrs. Eddy's statement, "It is our ignorance of God, the divine Principle, which produces apparent discord, and the right understanding of Him restores harmony" (Science and Health, p. 390). I knew that God's kingdom, here now, is good and ever harmonious. For the claims of fear, I realized, of course, the constant protection bestowed by God on all His children, and knew that radical reliance on Truth had removed all fear from many great characters of the Old Testament, and our great Master, Christ Jesus—all of whom were exposed to frightening situations of far greater severity than this. And for the argument of uncertainty, I found most helpful the understanding I had gained that progress is natural under the law of God, and that God governs all. I prayed with regard to motives: "Right motives give pinions to thought, and strength and freedom to speech and action" (ibid., p. 454). It was easy to recognize the error of the claims as I reminded myself of these truths.
