My grandmother introduced Christian Science to my family...

My grandmother introduced Christian Science to my family when I was a small child, but I did not have basic Sunday School training. Because of a lack of transportation, it was hard for me to attend the Sunday School. As I grew up, I drifted away from its teachings. Whenever I had the opportunity, I visited a Church of Christ, Scientist, but I did not study this religion or claim to understand it.

Later in life, after my marriage, I was constantly under the doctor's care or taking medication for an ulcer and a growth in the stomach. I had attacks of severe vomiting that lasted for hours. Many times my husband would have to call a doctor in the middle of the night to try to stop the seizures, and they would leave me weak for a couple of days. Finally one morning after I had gotten over one of these spells, I sat tearfully alone and wondered what I would do. I turned to God and asked God what I should do.

Many years before I had been given a beautiful set of books, the King James Version of the Bible and matching Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, the Christian Science textbook, by Mary Baker Eddy. Now in my tears I had asked God for help, and the thought came as though words were said aloud: "You have some books here; get them and read and study them." Immediately I jumped up and found the books. I first reached for the Bible. The pages opened to the twenty-third Psalm. I read, "The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want." I read this many times; then another verse and another.
