One morning, while I was getting into my car to go to work,...

One morning, while I was getting into my car to go to work, a young man stood in my way and stabbed me twice before fleeing. A woman came out to help me and called an ambulance and the police.

As I rode to the hospital in the ambulance, I held fast to this thought: I have never left the presence of divine Love. I had heard this thought expressed in a Christian Science lecture a few weeks before. The lecturer told of a man who had been assaulted and beaten beyond recognition. Through the power of this thought—that man can never be separated from the presence and power of divine Love—the man was healed quickly and so completely that he had not even a scar to indicate that he had ever been through such an experience. The recollection of this testimony and its spiritual message dispelled my fear and provided spiritual calm and confidence.

When I reached the hospital, I immediately informed the nurses and physicians that I was a Christian Scientist, and that I wanted only the treatment of a Christian Science practitioner. A nurse called my husband, who in turn called a Christian Science practitioner. On their way to the hospital the two of them also recalled the lecturer's words. When they arrived at my bedside, we rejoiced in the spiritual truths we had been sharing. Realizing the omnipotence of God, and man's coexistence with Him, I was able to see that man cannot be victimized by an evil suggestion claiming to be real and to possess power. Man is inseparable from Love's preserving power. Upon understanding the mental nature of the experience, I was able to see clearly that it was a dream, without substance, reality, or power.
