My introduction to Christian Science came through reading a Christian Science lecture published in a small weekly newspaper. Although the lecture filled me with curiosity regarding this religion, many years passed before I attended a Christian Science church service. By this time I had moved to another town and occasionally went to church, accompanied by my small niece and two nephews, who lived in my home.
Eventually the three children were enrolled in the Christian Science Sunday School. I borrowed a copy of the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, from the Reading Room and began to look into it. The statement (p. 278) "All that we term sin, sickness, and death is a mortal belief" was quite startling. Also another statement of truth stood out (p. 421): "Insist vehemently on the great fact which covers the whole ground, that God, Spirit, is all, and that there is none beside Him. There is no disease." This was a great revelation to me because I had never read such words before. Disease and illness had seemed so dominant, the human body so inclined to affliction, its conditions so unpredictable. Having known poor health, I felt great joy over the promise held out in Science and Health. For days I felt as if I were walking on air.
Since that time there have been many physical healings as well as instances of God's protection. One healing that stands out as I look back upon my early study of Science concerns my youngest nephew. He was five years old and had developed a serious case of measles after his older brother and sister had had them. I was sewing in the living room, and as he wished to be near me, I fixed a pallet for him in front of the gas heater, since it was a cold March day. He seemed feverish and ill. I gave him statements of truth to hold in thought regarding his flawless nature as a child of God. I prayed quietly and earnestly for him. Finally he slept. At the end of the afternoon, when he awakened, he felt much better. The next day he appeared normal. There was no recurrence of the ailment.
