Caring for Ourselves

One evening, on his way home from his office, a businessman stopped at the house of a Christian Science practitioner. He had many problems and had been working late. He seemed weary, and as he came in, he threw his coat and heavy briefcase carelessly on a chair. The practitioner looked at him compassionately and quietly asked, "Is that the way you treat yourself, too?" The question startled the man. He realized at once the relevance of it, and listened intently as the practitioner continued, "God cares for you with deep and tender love. Shouldn't you care for yourself as kindly as He does?"

It is very important to take good care of ourselves. It is not selfish to do this. In fact, it is a Christian duty. Jesus said, "Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on." Matt. 6:25; But he was not advocating self-neglect. He continued by pointing out the correct way of caring. He said, "Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you." v. 33;

Christian Science shows that seeking the kingdom and righteousness of God involves getting and keeping the understanding that the true nature and experience of man is spiritual, and that in his real being man is the manifestation of God, divine Love, supplied with all good and embraced in His infinite care. Mrs. Eddy writes in Science and Health, "Man is idea, the image, of Love." Science and Health, p. 475 Consequently, we should consistently know that the sons and daughters of God—that we ourselves—are both loving and loved. We are created by Him to bear witness to the radiant qualities of divine Love, and we abide in the atmosphere of Love.
