Mrs. Eddy states in a sermon, The People's Idea of God (p. 1), "Every step of progress is a step more spiritual." Sometimes our experiences make us feel we are making little progress. However, many lessons can be learned from these experiences to enable us to go forward.

Our family had such experiences a few years ago. Our three boys went through a series of contagious diseases and upset conditions lasting almost three months. Hardly a week went by during this time without one of them being ill. My husband and I turned to Christian Science, but I had let my thought become clouded with fear, discouragement, and resentment. At the end of the experience I felt relieved that it was all over, but I felt that I had not made much progress in spiritual understanding or in applying Christian Science.

A few months later another testing time came when our oldest child began to develop the mumps. Resentment and discouragement again tempted me, but I realized I had to take a mental stand immediately. I called a Christian Science practitioner for treatment. Several things stood out to me from my talking with him. First, I needed to be firm in my understanding. Secondly, I needed to realize the universal perfection of all of God's children. Another thing I felt was needed was to show the child how he could stand up to error and replace it with the truth. As I did these things, the healing began to take place and in a couple of days was complete. This was the first time I was able to get the child to apply the spiritual truth to himself.
