In the Combat Zone

Anyone in the combat zone in any war is faced with stark questions about his own life and the lives of others. From the beginning of time the demands of the battlefield have been incredible. Questions abound, but recourse to God is ever more clearly their only solution. Can Christian Science help? It certainly can.

During his military service, the writer proved again and again the truth of Paul's words, "God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it." I Cor. 10:13; Battle conditions certainly tempt one in no uncertain fashion to believe that there are powers apart from God. To the Christian Scientist, this is what the battle is really about. The way of escape and healing in any human situation is found through turning to God.

The writer had been studying Christian Science just one year before he was drafted into the Armed Forces. During the period before his unit was sent to a combat zone, he began to trust his life more and more to God and put Christian Science into practice, so far as he understood it. Eventually he became actively involved in the campaign and soon took command of an infantry company of about one hundred and twenty men. This experience required of him greater sacrifice of self and far greater trust than ever before in God's presence and power to help.
