No Black Bear

[For children]

Sonya sat on the workbench watching her big brother Ned wax her skis. They were her very own, and tomorrow she would take her first ski lesson. She felt so happy that she wanted to do something for Ned. "I'll get him an apple!" she decided.

Slipping down from the bench she trotted down the hall. As she passed the living room door, she heard Father say, "I'm not sure it was wise to get Sonya skis. If she has that breathing condition she had last year, skiing is definitely out"

Sonya didn't hear Mother's answer but hurried into the kitchen. She knew what they were talking about. Last winter, every time the family took her into the mountains, her nose stopped up and she could scarcely breathe. She remembered how Mother had stayed with her at night to read and pray. After a few moments she took a red apple from a bowl in the refrigerator and walked slowly back to the workroom. "Hey! Why the long face?" asked Ned. He wiped his hands and took a bite from the apple.
