In 1952, my husband was assigned to duty in Penang, Malaysia, with the Royal Air Force. Before I joined him, he had found out that there was only one other Christian Scientist living on the island and she was soon to leave.

Shortly after I arrived, our youngest son, aged two years, developed a high fever and refused to eat, drink, or sleep. As the child was very young and the symptoms were such that we thought the law would require it, we felt it was our duty to report his condition to the local doctor, who immediately paid us a visit. After examining the boy the doctor told us that he was very concerned with his condition, that he suspected polio, and that he could offer us no medical help.

At first we were fearful, but being students of Christian Science, we knew that the condition was not beyond God's help if we turned to Him in prayer. We then really started to work out this problem through Christian Science, holding in mind the perfect reflection of God as we thought of our little boy. On page 475 of Science and. Health by Mrs. Eddy we found this question: "What is man?" And the answer: "Man is not matter; he is not made up of brain, blood, bones, and other material elements. The Scriptures inform us that man is made in the image and likeness of God. Matter is not that likeness."
