Why Read the Bible?

Despite the immense output of secular books in the world today—recently, in a single year there were more than twenty-three thousand new titles published in Great Britain alone, and roughly the same number in the United States—the Bible remains the world's annual best seller. Why? Surely it cannot only be because it relates the history of a nation, nor merely because of its literary value. People who know it well and read it constantly will say that the reason is this: the Bible has the power to enlighten spiritually, to encourage, and to heal.

True, there are sections of the Bible, in both Old and New Testaments, that seem obscure when taken literally. Some parts seem irrelevant to modern life, some parts even fanciful. But experience shows that the Bible is filled with profound wisdom, and in proportion as a reader learns to interpret it spiritually and to apply its teachings to present experience, it becomes increasingly practical and helpful.

Students of Christian Science study the Bible daily, together with Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, and they do this because they have learned to find in these two books the answers to their questions and the solutions to their problems.
