My first healing was that of an infected thumb. My thumb was twice its normal size, and I had hardly slept for a week because of pain.

A copy of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy had been presented to me a few weeks previously. I loved the purity of the Word and suddenly realized that I could be healed through the application of Christian Science. A friend gave me the name of a Christian Science practitioner, and I hastened to her office. The moment I entered the door I felt a great sense of relief and peace. The pain was gone.

The practitioner spoke of God's unfailing love for man and told me not to look at the thumb but to "look away from the body into Truth and Love, the Principle of all happiness, harmony, and immortality" (Science and Health, p. 261).
