The Bible: Source of Healing

"The Scriptures are very sacred. Our aim must be to have them understood spiritually, for only by this understanding can truth be gained." Science and Health, p. 547; This statement by Mrs. Eddy points to the method by which Christian Science brings healing to the world.

The spiritual sense of Scripture figured importantly in an experience of a woman who jammed her finger in a folding garage door one evening, badly wounding it. The pain was severe, but the woman had just been deeply inspired by some testimonies of spiritual healing she had heard at a Christian Science midweek meeting. Now she held to the fact that the joy and inspiration of that evening were God-given and could in no way be reversed. She recalled the promise of Christ Jesus: "If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." John 8:31, 32;

What did continuing in his word mean? Surely it required something more soul-searching than memorizing his sayings or the formulation of doctrines to commemorate the events of his life. It demanded more than personal commitment to the fact of Jesus as Saviour of the world, vital as that conviction is. It had to mean such understanding trust in God's ever-presence and omnipotent care as would verify by healing experience the practical essence of the Master's mission. For he had said, "He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also." 14:12;
