Forty years ago, after physicians had been unable to help me, I was invited to attend a service in a Church of Christ, Scientist. This was truly the most wonderful thing that had ever happened to me. Shortly after I began to study, and with the treatment of a Christian Science practitioner, I was healed of a cancerous ulcer in the stomach. Once again I was able to care for my family and home, which I had not done for several years.

Five years later an ulcer appeared on my leg. This healing was slower, and was accompanied by the purifying of my thinking. As the Bible says, we must "be born again" (John 3:3). I cared for our family, having help once a week with the housework. There were no Christian Science visiting nurses, as we have today, so I learned how to care for the condition myself, with the prayerful support of a devoted practitioner, God showing each step of the way. Mrs. Eddy's hymn "Shepherd, show me how to go" was often used as a prayer (Poems, p. 14) . Contrary to medical beliefs, I experienced the harmonious birth of a perfect baby boy at home, and shortly thereafter the healing of my leg was complete.

During this experience the Lord's Prayer with the spiritual interpretation by Mrs. Eddy (Science and Health, pp. 16, 17) was studied and pondered until it was established in consciousness, including the words:
