In Science and Health Mrs. Eddy states (p. 167), "Only through radical reliance on Truth can scientific healing power be realized." I would like to relate a healing that was brought about through radical reliance on Truth, and this was evidently an example of mental surgery.
I wakened one morning with a very swollen jaw. I arose and read the Bible Lesson, thinking, as I read, that this discomfort would go away. As the day went on, my jaw became increasingly sore and swollen. I continued studying all day and far into the night. As I got no release and my jaw became rigid, I knew I must call for help, which I waited until morning to do.
By this time it was difficult to speak and make myself understood, but the Christian Science practitioner fully grasped my need for help and took up prayerful work immediately. We continued to work prayerfully together for two days, and on the afternoon of the second day I suddenly became aware that the pain had completely ceased.
I was joyous for this freedom from pain, and the first thing I did was to rinse my mouth with warm water, something I had been unable to do for several days. As I expelled the water into the bathroom bowl, an object hit the bowl. I examined it, and it looked like a decayed tooth.
A week later I had an appointment to have a dental bridge checked and took this object with me to show to the dentist, telling him I had lost what looked like a tooth since my last visit. He examined it and said "This is not a tooth." I told him that whatever it was it had come out of my jaw. He asked me to describe minutely the condition leading up to the expulsion of this object, and told me that this had been an obstruction in my salivary gland, and he could not believe it had been removed without material aid, as an obstruction of this size would have to be removed by surgery.
I told him I was a Christian Scientist, that I believed in healing through prayer, and that this had been the result of prayerful work of a Christian Science practitioner. His only remark was, "That's one for the book."
Since I have taken up the study of Christian Science, my formerly very confused and erratic way of living has turned into a harmonious, progressive, and fruitful existence. So much good has been and is my daily inheritance as an heir of God, divine Love, that my cup truly runneth over.
Class instruction has been a joyous experience, and serving in a branch church is proving to be very rewarding. My gratitude for Christian Science cannot be told in words. For the strong help given by consecrated practitioners, I am truly grateful.
