"EXCEPT A MAN BE BORN AGAIN"

John 3:3

"Except a man be born again"—
These were the words he said!
Were all my years of learning vain,
And all the knowledge fled?

A man full-grown, could I regress?
Return in form or mind
To time's outgrown, forgotten womb—
Naked, helpless, blind?

Ah, no! Beneath the words there lay
A higher, deeper thought:
True life outreaches birth and death,
This was the truth he taught.

Birth, then, is an awakening
To true identity
As idea-form, not matter-mold,
God's likeness, whole and free!

Each year unfolds infinity,
Each day is Spirit's morn,
And heaven's gates swing wide for him
Who enters them reborn!
