We Are "sons of God"
One of the Bible statements best known and loved by students of Christian Science is from the First Epistle of John: "Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God." I John 3:1; This declaration implies that we all can expect a rich spiritual inheritance from the Father, infinite Mind. Yet when it first comes to the attention of men and women, it often seems not only a doubtful promise but even a ludicrous one—to think that anyone could apply it to himself!
The average person is keenly aware of faults and shortcomings in his human character. He feels that honesty forbids him to claim to be the son of God because this would imply a state of immortal perfection and blessedness which, humanly, is far from evident.
But one of the fundamental teachings of Christianity concerns God's universal parenthood, and to demonstrate God's healing power as Christ Jesus did, we must accept wholeheartedly this statement of divine sonship about ourselves and others here and now. We need to understand why we can, in all sincerity, affirm our immortal perfection, claim the blessings of close spiritual relationship with God, and how, without hypocrisy, we can defend this position steadfastly, even in the face of apparently overwhelming mortal evidence to the contrary.
