In 1931, my husband and I lost a house through foreclosure of the mortgage. The manager of the loan company told us that we were chosen from those who were in the same predicament because we were so young and could more readily begin over again. We unhappily went along with this estimation of events but held no ill will toward the man or the company.

We moved into humble quarters. After my father-in-law lost his position of many years, it seemed advisable to move into his home and help by sharing with him. Our books were stored in a barn along with our furnishings. Since I was not an active student of Christian Science, I did not miss my Bible and Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy until the need was great for the comfort I knew they would give me if I read them. I had never sought help for any problem other than sickness, but I hoped for release from daily fears. My husband told me the boxes of books were underneath and behind so many things that he would not be able to get at them without help. It never occurred to me to borrow others, but I began to ponder things I knew by memory, and I soon found I could pray by using the ideas I was coming to understand.

Many things that happened proved that God is indeed a God at hand. When a position opened for my husband in another city with a salary of four times the commissions he was earning, he readily accepted. My father-in-law found work, and we all were blessed. We moved to the new area, and when I unpacked my books, I began the regular study of them.
