In 1931, my husband and I lost a house through foreclosure of the mortgage. The manager of the loan company told us that we were chosen from those who were in the same predicament because we were so young and could more readily begin over again. We unhappily went along with this estimation of events but held no ill will toward the man or the company.

I had never sought help for any problem other than sickness, but I hoped for release from daily fears.
