About twenty years ago I began suffering from insomnia, which finally became so acute that I could no longer sleep at all. Since I was a very new student of Christian Science, I felt unable to pray for myself while carrying on usual activities, and I found it necessary to take a temporary leave from my position as an executive in a large manufacturing plant. During this leave I obtained help from a Christian Science practitioner, who during our biweekly visits gradually helped me replace my erroneous thoughts concerning sleep with spiritual concepts of peace and gratitude.

For years prior to my introduction to Science, I had believed that it was necessary to obtain at least seven or eight hours of sleep each night to be properly prepared, both physically and mentally, for the next day's work at the plant. During my visits with the practitioner she assured me that God's law alone governs man and that I should not and need not accept man-made laws concerning sleep. I also learned that the daily study of the Lesson-Sermon from the Christian Science Quarterly provides the answers to all human problems. This knowledge enabled me to study the lesson each day with a sense of freshness and anticipation I had not previously experienced. Gradually the sense of loneliness, particularly during long, sleepless nights, was replaced by truths I had studied in the Lesson-Sermon during the day.

One day, as I studied the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, I came upon the following passage (p. 556): "In sleep, cause and effect are mere illusions. They seem to be something, but are not. Oblivion and dreams, not realities, come with sleep."
