A few years ago I was confronted with a respiratory ailment that seemed to defy all my efforts to see its unreality. Over a period of about six weeks my physical condition had deteriorated to the point where I had lost over forty pounds. I could not sleep except for short snatches, and the incessant coughing made it difficult for me to retain any food.

I was having continuous help from a Christian Science practitioner, and my seeming failure to respond to the treatment made me all the more fearful and discouraged. Previously I had had many healings through the application of Christian Science, and so I could not understand why I seemed to be drifting in the wrong direction.

Late one afternoon when I had phoned the practitioner and was pouring out my tale of woe and fear, he very kindly but forcefully called to my attention the fact that I really had much for which to be grateful, and that in place of keeping my thought on the physical symptoms I should be expressing gratitude for God's goodness—for all the blessings I had already received. He knew whereof he spoke, because he had helped me through some deep waters. I had to acknowledge that I did have much reason to be thankful.
