The Spiritual Power of Honesty

An honest man stands tall in his community, for he expresses qualities that demand respect. He is to be trusted in matters pertaining to himself and others. The Psalmist prayed, "Judge me, O Lord, according to mine integrity that is in me."Ps. 7:8; The businessman who is known as a man of integrity, dedicated to rendering good service, is laying the foundation for his business prosperity. His customers, looking for quality and service, are quick to tell others of his reliability.

How can these admirable qualities not only be encouraged but protected from the encroachments of evil, which would destroy business? Filching from an employer is a practice which seems of little concern to those not involved in it. Pilfering and shoplifting in the stores and supermarkets is increasing at an alarming rate. Should we ignore the fact that more and more young children and supposedly respectable adults are capitulating to these evil practices? Let's lay aside indifference and become actively involved in counteracting evil as Christian Science teaches us to do.

Through this Science we learn that truthfulness is inherent in spiritual man. We should accept this fact and endeavor to demonstrate it in all the details of our daily life. To do this let's start at the beginning, with man created in the image and likeness of God; then in the home we can "show and tell." Each time a parent returns change to the cashier who mistakenly gives him too much, or makes a sincere effort to locate the owner of an article he finds, or leaves his name and telephone number on the parked car he damaged—and is equally dependable and fair with his family—he has, by example, confirmed his integrity.
