Songs of Praise

All through the Bible are songs of praise to God for His goodness toward man. The Psalmist sings of his trust in Him in the familiar words, "The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want."Ps. 23:1; Elsewhere he expresses his joy after God has delivered him from fearsome woes: "He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings. And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God." 40:2, 3 ;

Such songs are in the heart of many people today, for with the help of Christian Science many have been brought up out of a pit of despair. I am one of them, for many years ago I was healed of a spinal disease with the help of Christian Science. My illness had been pronounced incurable, and the prospect was a life of semiinvalidism for me. But, like Psalmist, I too was brought up out of this horrible predicament; like his, my was filled with gratitude and praise.

Such a personal experience is precious beyond words—the silent but irresistible power of Spirit has been manifested in us, and our feet have been set on "a rock," a solid conviction that Spirit, not matter, is the perfect healer. Why is a healing in Christian Science such a unique experience? Because it opens our thought to the Christ, Truth, which has healed us and makes us receptive to spiritual values. We feel a deep, inner joy we have never known before, a joy far beyond mere satisfaction because of physical comfort. Our dormant spiritual sense has been awakened, and a new sense of purpose and a fresh perspective of life occupy our thought. This newness of life seeks expression in songs of praise to God, the Giver of all good.
