"A table before me"

[For young adults]

Our first time to host a big event! How do we meet this challenge—with poise and calm planning or with frantic hurry and worry?

If we are wise, we will first realize that we have the God-given right to undertake a worthy project with peace and assurance and then go ahead with our plans. We will follow Paul's blueprint for truly successful entertaining: "Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another;...given to hospitality." Rom. 12:10, 13; As we overcome the tendency toward needless bustle and care, our plans will develop smoothly, and we will find ourselves more able to offer an enjoyable evening to everyone.

I once decided to cook a complete Finnish dinner for two close friends who had shown me much kindness. I would serve everything from a full smorgasbord to cold fruit soup, and this without any helpmeet to smooth my way! I phoned my friends daily to announce an ever more elaborate menu, and in an expansive moment enlarged my guest list. And then the planned evening was almost upon me, and I began to face the work at hand.
