At the time our oldest son reached school age we had to acknowledge that we had been trying to ignore the child's increasing loss of hearing. The public school insisted that we have his hearing tested, and we took him to a prominent eye, ear, and throat specialist. We were informed that he would become totally deaf and nothing could be done to prevent it. The specialist further said that a very painful operation could possibly prolong the hearing for a time, but he kindly advised us to enter him in a school for the deaf.

As I listened to the physician's diagnosis, I rebelled at such an erroneous concept of man. As he spoke, I mentally refuted each prognosis he presented with very clear statements of the truth I had learned in Sunday School. This was an amazing experience because, although I had been brought up in Christian Science, I had attended the church of my husband's choice since the time of my marriage seven years before and opened my Science books very seldom. But that precious seed, planted in my early years in the Christian Science Sunday School and in my mother's home, grew and matured when I needed it.

We returned home, and I immediately called for help from a Christian Science practitioner and set about reacquainting myself with my books, the Bible and the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy.
