You Cannot Be Deprived

Freedom of speech, freedom of opportunity, equality of education, the right to self-determination, the right to basic food and sustenance, all these and many more human rights are demanded by our current activists. Freedom is a basic word. Peace is another. We learn in Christian Science that all human rights must have a spiritual or metaphysical base in order to be legitimate and demonstrable. In this Science we can find these spiritual originals and begin to establish them in consciousness, and hence in our experience and in our society.

Mary Baker Eddy says in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures: "This is the doctrine of Christian Science: that divine Love cannot be deprived of its manifestation, or object; that joy cannot be turned into sorrow, for sorrow is not the master of joy; that good can never produce evil; that matter can never produce mind nor life result in death. The perfect man—governed by God, his perfect Principle—is sinless and eternal." Science and Health, p. 304; Justice is the nature of God's government.

In this Science we learn to work at some of the root concepts in human consciousness and thus to make fundamental changes in the thinking of the age. We are engaged in the very basic changes that challenge prejudice, limitation, partiality, and, above all, the material-mindedness that gives rise to all these limitations. It may not be so obvious to many that materiality is the basic injustice that haunts humanity. This is the key error, and the way to overcome it is brought out in the teachings of the master Christian, Christ Jesus.
