Divine Principle Is the Living God
By defining God as divine Principle, Mrs. Eddy has opened new vistas of spiritual perception for mankind. Here is a term that lifts human thought above a manlike conception of Deity and reveals His infinite nature as changeless, incorporeal Mind, or First Cause.
Traditional conceptions of Deity are changing. Although the idea of God as Principle may yet seem difficult to many theologians, anthropomorphism has been abandoned in many quarters, and the conception of God as the very "ground of being" has taken hold in the thought of many. This comes closer to Mrs. Eddy's scientific revelation of the divine nature, and it would not be presumptuous to say that the leavening effect of Christian Science on religious thought has played an important role in this change. For over one hundred years the concept of God as perfect, unchanging Principle has been a vital factor in the healing ministry of Christian Science. Because this concept is true, it is dynamic. When understood, it heals individual cases of sickness and sin, and is at work in the general thinking of mankind, awaking it to reality.
Although nowhere in the Bible is God spoken of directly as Principle, there are many instances where this fact is definitely implied. James implies the invariable goodness of divine Principle when he speaks of "the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning."James 1:17; And the writer of the book of Ecclesiastes asserts, "I know that, whatsoever God doeth, it shall be for ever: nothing can be put to it, nor any thing taken from it: and God doeth it, that men should fear before him." Eccl. 3:14; We must remember, too, that it was this invariably righteous "Father of lights" who revealed to Moses the Ten Commandments, the Principle-impelled laws underlying ideal conduct and morality.
