The Unity of Being
Obviously one of the most prevalent problems in society is the division and dissension that arise from differing points of view, from differing backgrounds of history and experience, from differing concepts of right and wrong. A division and dualism appears even in individual consciousness, and one can feel the continuing conflict between good and evil. A basic answer to this problem may be seen in the concept of oneness—one God, one Mind, one creation, one truth of being. It is the understanding of this divine oneness as explained in Christian Science that stills the argument, quiets the disturbance, and resolves the division or conflict.
A great discovery is recorded in the Bible: "Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord: and thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might." Deut. 6:4, 5; This indicates a singleness of nature that pervades all creation, and it is the religious and philosophical foundation for harmony both in the individual and in society. Having one God who is absolute good, one intelligence that controls all creation, one Soul which is the source of all individuality, reveals the unity of being and establishes a working basis upon which all relationship problems may be solved.
Those who understand the fact of one God, one Mind, must faithfully contribute to the unification of mankind through their intelligent prayers. They must lay the foundation for harmony in international relations, in community affairs, and in individual homes. By realizing the oneness of good they can counteract hatred and distrust. By realizing the infinite nature of good they can cancel out jealousy, envy, lust. By worshiping one God they exclude the belief in evil. It is the oneness and allness of God that answers humanity's needs.
