How Mind Governs the Body

Some questions that bother people are: Is God, who is omnipresent Spirit, unerring Mind, beneficent Love, as the Bible teaches, concerned with matter, error, or disease? How can He govern the body, regulate the heart or other organic functions? How can divine Mind, dwelling in infinite perfection, govern something imperfect?

That God, Spirit, does govern the body, Christ Jesus left no doubt. Did he not say in the Lord's Prayer, "Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven"? Matt. 6:10; And he proved God's will on earth by healing the sick, by restoring the human body to its normal healthy conditions. Jesus' understanding of Spirit gave him complete authority over the conditions defined by the material senses and set the standard of Christian healing for all time.

Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, had her own enlightening experience of Christian healing in 1866. It was then that she began to grasp the Science of God's government, a Science that no one had grasped or practiced understandingly since the time of Jesus and his followers. In her book Retrospection and Introspection, under the chapter heading "The Great Discovery," she gives a brief history of how her discovery occurred, together with scientific supporting reasoning. "I had learned," she writes, "that Mind reconstructed the body, and that nothing else could. How it was done, the spiritual Science of Mind must reveal. It was a mystery to me then, but I have since understood it." Ret., p. 28;
