Words of Current Interest

The words in this issue are related to the Lesson-Sermon in the CHRISTIAN SCIENCE QUARTERLY designated to be read in Christian Science churches on December 20, 1970.

The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light: they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined (Isa. 9:2)

The original Hebrew consonants found here can be read to mean either "shadow of death" or "darkness; deep darkness; deep shadow," according to the vowels presupposed by the translator. The New English Bible reads: "The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light: light has dawned upon them, dwellers in a land as dark as death."
