Body and Soul
There has been very minute dissection of the body with detailed analysis of the chemical components and organic structure, even to the extent that men are contemplating the possibility of creating life artificially, and yet there is generally little if any progress in the definition of identity and individuality.
The identity crisis is far from solved with many individuals who wonder why they are here and what purpose their existence serves. A merely biological approach does not explain existence, for it misses the intelligent purpose in creation or the meaning of life. Mrs. Eddy says in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures: "Whoever is incompetent to explain Soul would be wise not to undertake the explanation of body. Life is, always has been, and ever will be independent of matter; for Life is God, and man is the idea of God, not formed materially but spiritually, and not subject to decay and dust." Science and Health, p. 200;
To lift thought above the present level of observation and sensual orientation, we need a fresh sense of Soul. Soul is God, the creative intelligence that governs the universe and man. Soul is divine Mind, the source of all identity, that which gives individuality to man and meaning to his existence. The human mind in imitative fashion creates its concept of identity and presents it as man. But without a comprehension of divine cause the human mind lacks direction and purpose. Hence the frustration of human existence and the struggle for definition. Only as one comes to understand Soul does he gain a reason for being.
