I began studying Christian Science when I was very confused and afraid of being alone. My husband was gone for eight months on a special assignment, and our small son and I remained behind at a national monument in the desert. Another child was on the way, and we had no telephone. I could not sleep well at night because of fear. One night I awoke, and the thought came to me strongly, "You are not alone. God is with you." I had been fortunate indeed to have been able to attend the Christian Science Sunday School from time to time as a child, and I remembered that I had learned that truth there. So I earnestly began to study Christian Science.

Soon I was instantaneously healed of smoking, which I was using as a crutch during my uncertainty. I had tried several times to stop through willpower, only to have the habit get a worse hold on me. The healing took place when I humbly opened the textbook at random to the spiritual interpretation of this line in the Lord's Prayer (Science and Health, p. 17): "And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil." Mrs. Eddy's interpretation follows: "And God leadeth us not into temptation, but delivereth us from sin, disease, and death."
