Strengthening Our Citadel

Since the beginning of time a citadel or fortress has stood for a place of refuge from harm or evil, a protection from marauders and from invasion by enemies. Great thought and effort were expended in building these massive physical structures, yet most of them have been destroyed by the ravages of wars and time. They were of no permanent value to the safety of mankind.

There is a citadel, however, that is invulnerable, actually above and beyond all outside attacks and conditions. It is the consciousness of man's true status as the son of God, forever strong, perfect, and complete. This state of true knowing needs no protection. It is ever awake to the indissoluble spiritual relationship between God and man, perfect Mind and idea.

On the other hand, unenlightened material thinking, as distinct from the divine or immortal Mind, would have us believe that safety is built on, in, and with matter and needs strengthening in matter. This is the dream from which we need to awaken. As long as we think of ourselves as vulnerable human beings, we must strengthen our understanding of our true selfhood to protect ourselves from harm. When we lift thought to coincide with the divine, we are conscious of the only citadel there is—spiritual understanding.
