During the year 1925, I was invited to attend a Christian Science lecture. After the lecture I was loaned the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. Through the study of this book and the help of a Christian Science practitioner our young son was healed of chronic bronchial asthma. The case had been diagnosed by three medical practitioners. The same boy also was healed of periodic convulsions, the cause of which had never been named.
Christian Science treatment was sought when our son had an attack of whooping cough, which I had always dreaded for him. He was healed. The bronchial asthma made itself apparent only once after that. By that time I had learned to rejoice in our newfound knowledge of God's love, and the error simply disappeared never to reappear. The convulsions did not recur after I commenced reading the Bible and Science and Health.
I am very grateful that Christian Science was presented to me while my family was young and that they had the joy of attending a Christian Science Sunday School.
Contagious diseases such as measles, mumps, and a case of pleurisy were healed in a few hours. A broken shinbone knit beautifully when the decision to rely radically upon the truth for spiritual healing was firmly established. Blood poisoning, too, was quickly cleared up when material aids were discarded.
Physical healings were not the only benefits received in our family. Christian Science has been our guide and help in practically every phase of human experience when it has been earnestly applied.
More than once we proved the truth of Mrs. Eddy's words (Science and. Health, p. 60), "Soul has infinite resources with which to bless mankind, and happiness would be more readily attained and would be more secure in our keeping, if sought in Soul." Our supply usually appeared plentifully as right ideas were understood and used wisely.
Soon after I had joined The Mother Church and a branch church, there came the opportunity to serve as permanent soloist in the branch church. At that time I had three very young children, and we were engaged in a business which required attention six days a week.
We had put the business on the market, but a year had gone by without results. At this juncture the desire to serve was so strong that I decided to accept the invitation and trust God completely. The text on our church wall (Matt. 6:33), "Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you," was ever in my thought. I felt that in service to His church I would be seeking the kingdom of God first. I rang the clerk of the church and said I would be ready to start in three months.
Within the next month one of our own clients asked if we would be interested in selling the business. As a result, at the end of the month, the sale had been made. We were saved the agent's commission, the buyer had the benefit of the Christmas trade, which was very good, and I had about two months to prepare for the work of soloist. I enjoyed singing in this position for almost five years. Furthermore, during this period I was healed of migraine, which had troubled me for many years.
Another outstanding experience was the building of our home. We had assets, but the greatest of these was our absolute reliance on the guidance of divine Mind.
I thank God for this unspeakable gift of Christian Science, for sending His Son, Christ Jesus, who showed us the way, and for his devoted follower, Mrs. Eddy. Class instruction and church work, especially long periods of teaching in the Sunday School, are precious experiences, greatly treasured.
