In 1936, I had what is most commonly referred to as a nervous breakdown. This was accompanied by insomnia, so that I had scarcely slept at all for several weeks, even though I took sleeping potions prescribed by my doctor in constantly increasing quantities. I had finally reached the point where I despaired of ever resuming my business activities. Only the love and concern for my wife and young family deterred me from finding some means to end everything.

It was in this seemingly hopeless state that I recalled having seen a Christian Science Sentinel a few years before. I had perused it somewhat casually at the time, particularly the testimonies of healing. Now, in my extremity and as a last resort, I decided to find out what this religion was. So, without telling my family, I located a Christian Science practitioner.

On arriving at the practitioner's office I asked if Christian Science could help one in my condition. The response was that it certainly could. I asked for and received a treatment. The same day I purchased a copy of the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. The result was that I went home and enjoyed the first real sleep and rest that I had had in weeks. I awakened refreshed in what seemed to me to be a beautiful new world. I then discarded all material remedies and returned to my office two days later.
