I would like to bear witness to the fact that the practice of Christian Science is a prophylactic, a preventive art.

During the summer of my sophomore year in high school I was looking for a job. Not having transportation, I took to the road, hitchhiking. After many cars had passed, a large black touring car stopped, and I got in. The driver inquired where I was going, and I told him that I was seeking employment for the summer. He said he was looking for someone to work for him and would pay me a certain amount each day and buy my ammunition. He turned out to be a rumrunner! When I told him I wasn't interested in that kind of employment, he pulled out a gun. Waving it toward me, he said I was going to work for him whether I liked it or not.

I was filled with fear but immediately turned to God in prayer as I had been taught in the Christian Science Sunday School. The thought came to put my right hand on the door lever and throw myself out, which I did, without any injury to myself, although the car was traveling at considerable speed. I ran into a nearby cornfield and hid until the man gave up searching for me and went on his way.
