Over a generation ago my mother was condemned to a life of semi-invalidism. An X ray showed a dislocation of certain organs—the medical diagnosis being a dropped stomach and severe complications. She had had two major operations and was facing a third. We had had the textbook, Science and Health with Key to The Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, in our home for a number of years. A great-aunt, in gratitude for a remarkable healing she had received through Christian Science, had given a copy to nearly every member of the family. Staunch loyalty to the Protestant church of which we were members, however, had made it impossible for my mother to accept the teachings at first.

However, in her extremity she turned wholeheartedly to God and began to read the textbook again. She read far into the night, until she felt a great sense of joy and the comforting conviction that she was healed. She then submitted to another exhaustive medical examination, and the decision to operate was put aside. A friend advised my mother to have a talk with a Christian Science practitioner, which she did. During that first interview, which served to crystallize her healing experience, Mother asked the practitioner if Christian Science was true. Through the practitioner's answer Mother realized that Christian Science is the unadulterated teaching of Christ Jesus. She said to the practitioner, "Thank you. Now I know what the Christ is. I had always wondered." The practitioner said of this visit with Mother, "I have witnessed a Christ-healing."

And so it was. Mother left the practitioner's office walking on air. Several days later we noticed that she was reading without glasses. She had had the strongest glasses that a specialist could recommend, and had a fear of blindness. The healing remained constant; and even when well over eighty years of age, she was still able to study the Lesson-Sermon in the Christian Science Quarterly daily without glasses.
