The Basis of Successful Treatment

Christ Jesus promised that certain unmistakable signs would follow those who truly accepted his teachings. One that is particularly pregnant with meaning for Christian Scientists is this, as recorded in Mark: "They shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover."^{ Mark 16:18;}

The laying on of hands is generally agreed by Bible scholars to mean the expression or exercise of spiritual authority. Therefore the meaning of the Master's words would seem to be that sickness is to be treated through the utilization of divine power. In this light the laying on of hands might be comparable to the giving of a Christian Science treatment.

The primary action of this prayerful work is to free thought from beliefs of limitation: limited strength, limited supply, limited happiness, limited opportunities, limited health, and so on. The accomplishment of this purpose of liberation implies the recognition of reality as present harmony, holiness, and health. Such healing is infallible proof of Christliness. It demonstrates the Christly spirit of love, the Christly understanding of the reality of good alone, the Christly method of treating disease through spiritual means alone.
