Christian Science has been the religion of our family for five generations. My father's grandmother was the first Scientist in the family, and she experienced a complete healing of a broken hip when she was over eighty years of age.

One of my grandmothers was introduced to Christian Science in a most interesting way. As a young married woman, she was in ill health and very despondent over problems which seemed beyond solution. One day when she felt completely overwhelmed by her lot, the doorbell rang, and she answered it to find a door-to-door encyclopedia salesman, who began his sales talk. After a minute or two, apparently having taken in the situation and the fact that my grandmother had been crying, he stopped in mid-sentence and said, "Lady, you don't need an encyclopedia, but I have something that you do need, something that can really help you." He left and returned with a copy of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, which he gave her and urged her to read.

We have never known who this unselfish person was, but his loving act resulted in my grandmother's complete healing. She joined the church and became an active Christian Scientist, and all her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren have been Christian Scientists ever since.
