Long before I became interested in Christian Science, I spent...

Long before I became interested in Christian Science, I spent some weeks in a hospital after a mastoid operation. I was told by the surgeon that my eardrum had been pierced. He added that I would gradually lose my sense of hearing in that ear—in about twenty to thirty years.

About twenty-five years later I began to notice that my hearing was gradually lessening, until I had to transfer the telephone receiver to the other ear. I had, in the meantime, become interested in Christian Science and intermittently prayed about this condition, but it was not healed. I had work that required constant attention for long hours during the day, but I came to the conclusion that, work or no work, my hearing was more important, and I did earnestly pray as I had been taught, fervently and at times even vehemently declaring the truth of the perfection of man as the image and likeness of God. The hearing returned in a few days, and I was back to normal. This was about fifteen years ago.

A short time ago, after I visited a friend who was going through the same difficulty that I had experienced forty years before, the same sensation appeared in my other ear. This time I got busy at once and asked for help from a consecrated practitioner. In a few days the sensation and swelling disappeared, only to transfer to my other ear, which had been affected the first time. But that, too, was disposed of in a short time, and all was well again.
